Stinging nettles: Make sure you cook before eating!
Today's tip: Who says organic food has
to be expensive
?

Last week we looked at increasing organic food. This time of year is a great time to pick and cook stinging nettles whilst they are young. Just use the top leaves and make sure you pick somewhere where they are not regularly exposed to car exhaust fumes. Once they are cooked they lose their sting - though we suggest you pick them wearing gloves!

Nettles are high in vitamins A, C and D as well as iron, manganese, potassium and calcium. They have traditionally been used for their anti-inflammatory properties. They may have anti-asthmatic effects, helping protect against airway inflammation. They also have anti-hypertensive effects and may decrease cardiovascular risk factors and other complications in people with diabetes.

Use cooked stinging nettles as you would spinach. They are great in soups.

Reduce your exposure to pesticides that cause neurologic effects...

Eat organic where you can, or grow your own!
Today's tip: Reduce your exposure to pesticides
Organophosphorus pesticides are a group of insecticides known to cause neurologic effects. Children eating non-organic fruit, vegetables and juice have been found to have levels higher than the guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Switching children to an organic diet for 5 days reduced these levels so they could no longer be detected.

Even if your diet is not all organic, it can be beneficial to make sure that some of it is.

Artificial sweeteners may contribute to weight gain...

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends slashing sugar intake worldwide...
Today's tip: Our bodies are not designed to handle sweet taste without calories
If you want to lose weight, you  may think that it makes sense to replace sugar with low or no-calorie artificial sweeteners. However, artificial sweeteners enhance your appetite, so you eat more. Artificial sweeteners have also been linked to weight gain even if you do not consume more calories.

So if you want to lose weight, it is worth reducing artificial sweeteners (as well as sugar).
